Why a Food Shed "Facebook"? What Can You Do In Here?
My wife and I find ourselves increasing showing the signs of LS: the Locavore Syndrome. For the holidays this past month, we made a concerted effort to purchase gifts made or grown locally and, if they ended up traveling a few hundred miles as part of their distribution, it was with us as we went to renew ties with family around the Midwest.
Those of us who have started this vertical (niche) social network for Locavores want to grow it to become a cyberspace "local" space where people who want to learn more about eating as much as possible from their "food shed" can share challenges and accomplishments, without having to physically move their bodies thousands of miles.
Some of us have been very active in the sustainability and climate change movements. One of us has great depth of experience in the formation and cultivation of online communities. Each of us wishes to personally get better at consuming locally with the benefit of the already-accomplished learning curves of others.
Identities.
If you have a business, farm, or do consulting, feel free to create an identity for yourself and one for your company, also, or even create a group around your company or nonprofit organization. Each identity has a profile, and an accompanying profile page, which you can use in nearly any way you wish. You can also extensively modify its apearance.
Invite.
Invite everyone you may think is or should be interested to join this network. Its strength will be its members and what they share with each other. There is an "Invite" tab at the top of every page in the network.
Share.
You can share photographs, videos, and blog posts. You can contribute questions and answers, or ideas, via the network-wide discussion forum, or use any of the discussion forums that are also created for you within each group that is formed. You can attach documents in Word, Excel, PDF, and other formats to posts in blogs and forums.
Groups.
You will notice that we have created several "group" in here. They are merely suggestive. Any member of the Food Shed Network can create topically- or geographically-based groups. If you have the need, you may create a group that has restricted membership.
Chaos and creativity.
The less anyone, including us, tries to control the interaction of people in here, the more valuable this shared space becomes. So, be creative, share, fly free!
